“Dreams are today’s answers to tomorrow’s questions.” –Edgar Cayce
Frequently Asked Questions (and some that are less frequently asked but we think are interesting questions nonetheless)
What is My Virtual Dream?
My Virtual Dream is an entertainment and learning experience about mind fitness and brain health at the intersection of science + art + music.
In this unique immersive multi-media performance you become the performer; using your brain waves you co-create a stunning performance of visuals, sounds and music all projected in real-time, live.
What do you mean “the dream is created by me?”
MVD is essentially powered by you – we can not dream without you. While we can’t read your mind, MVD uses a combination of generated and prerecorded animations, music and live musicians, which are all influenced by the live brainwaves from the dreamers. The result is unique every time.
Who is involved?
My Virtual Dream and The Virtual Brain are part of a global brain-health research initiative built by 15 distinguished neuroscience teams spanning 7 countries and 10 universities. The lab teams are located in Barcelona, Berlin, Brisbane, London, Los Angeles, Marseille, New York, Toronto.
What is The Virtual Brain?
The Virtual Brain will deliver the first open simulation of the human brain based on individual large-scale connectivity. Within the next 5 years, running on comparably tame hardware and right in your browser! By employing novel concepts from neuroscience, effectively reducing the complexity of the brain simulation while still keeping it sufficiently realistic. Why? To explore to what degree manipulations of brain connectivity can be exploited for clinical purposes in epilepsy and stroke.
The Virtual Brain will be completely customized to an individual patient‘s brain. Our vision is to safely devise, benchmark and test therapies before pharmaceutical or surgical application.
Why was My Virtual Dream created?
We believe harnessing innovations and technologies to understand the most complex machine in the universe – the human brain. Unlocking the mysteries of the human brain is one of the preeminent challenges of our time. My Virtual Dream was created to help The Virtual Brain science team uncover new insights into brain health and wellness and to share those insights with you.
What do you mean by “audience participation”?
MVD values your participation. Quality, documentation and collection of brain data
is important to us. So are more contextual forms of feedback – like questionnaires, comments, conversations. MVD is a conduit for continuing research and education of brain function and health, and we can’t do it without your input. This is where you can actively participate in the future of brain science.
What do you mean by a collective experience?
MVD uses neurofeedback to produce sound and images modulated by your brainwaves. They are representative of your current state, moment to moment. As you interact with MVD, you will learn to see your contributions to the dream, and eventually learn to control them. Many aspects of the dream are unique to you, but you can’t do it alone. If you work together with the other dreamers, you will discover hidden layers to the dream.
What is a BCI?
BCI stands for Brain Computer Interface. A BCI device is used to collect human brain waves and transmit them to a computer or machine to perform a task. It’s kind of like using your brain waves to move a wheelchair forward or open a door. Using your brain waves to complete a task on a computer or machine is not nearly as easy as using mouse or keyboard to complete a task, it’s much more subtle and multi dimensional. Using brain waves to perform a task continues to be a difficult scientific and engineering challenge. The MVD team seeks to learn from each dream to improve BCI methods which can lead to significant research breakthroughs in brain computer interface technologies.
Where Does The Music Come From?
The music is created by musicians, recorded and then stored in our computers. The peak emotional moments of the audience’s brain waves activate the memory of the recorded audio files, to remake a music experience unlike you’ve ever heard before. It’s kind of like the audience’s brain waves are acting like a DJ, remixing audio files into something new. Additionally, some of the music you hear during My Virtual Dream is performed by live musicians.
Where Does The Art Come From?
The art is created by artists and then stored in our computers. Using the five main frequencies of each of the dreamers’ brain waves, artwork stored like memories inside our computers are reorganized into a powerful visual dreamscape.
Where and when can I experience My Virtual Dream?
See Upcoming events.
How can I get involved?
Volunteer (event logistics, dream guides, marketing, social media, production)
Collaborate (music, art, science, new media)
What is done with the data collected?
The data is analyzed by researchers for brain research purposes. All data collected is completely autonomous.
Do you read minds?
No we’re not mind readers.
Is this like Articfical Intelligence (AI)?
No, not exactly. AI is a pretty big topic and is outside the scope and purpose of My Virtual Dream. You could say that some of the technology of The Virtual Brain could one day contribute to artificial intelligence.
How can I collaborate?
We collaborate with people from all around the world who share a variety of skills and talents. Artists. Musicians. New Media Artists (VJs). Computer and Game Programmers. Engineers. Writers. Poets. Audio and Visual Poduction and Projection Experts.
How much does it cost to attend My Virtual Dream?
Some presentations are free to the public. Some presentations are ticketed events. Some presentations are paid for by sponsors. Some presentations are private events.
Do I have to be a certain age to participate or attend My Virtual Dream?
Anyone any age can attend a performance of My Virtual Dream. To participate as “Dreamer” you need to be over the age of 18, sign a consent and waiver.
